System Panel Header. Amongst all, connecting the system panel to the motherboard is the most important thing to do. In this header/connector, you need to attach your system's power switch, reset button, power LED, and hard drive activity LED. Look for PANEL, F_PANEL, JFP1, or a somewhat identical label on the PCB.. Use Only One Connector: If your motherboard has two CPU power connectors, one 8-pin and one 4-pin, you can use just the 8-pin connector. This is enough power for most CPUs, but you won't be able to overclock your CPU if you do this. Use CPU Adapter Cable: Some CPU adapters have a single 8-pin connector on one end and two 4-pin connectors on.

Two 8-pin connectors on a z790 motherboard. I've ordered an ASUS TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI motherboard but shortly after I noticed that it says in its manual that BOTH 8-pin cpu power cables need to be plugged into it. The manual doesn't mention anything about one being optional. Well the issue is my PSU only has one 4+4 cpu connector.. Also, many boards for those cpus require use of both or simply don't work. Only the 3rd connector (4 or 8 pin) is optional for OC purposes. Pin count on psu side is moot. The only concern is the motherboard side of the wire. Psu could be a 4,6,8,10 or 12 pin connection, makes no difference, it's just an attachment connector for the modular cable.
